Everyone’s on social media these days. More than by phone, more than by email – more, even, than with face-to-face conversation, social media is the main way that we, as a species, now communicate.

Whether that’s a good or a bad thing is up for debate but, the reality is, it’s the truth. If you want to reach your customers, you need to reach them there.

Sounds simple enough; a couple of Facebook posts here and there, the occasional Instagram picture and you’re in business, right?

Sadly, no. The world of social media marketing is an industry in itself, that requires consistency and creativity in order to crack.

To succeed, you’ll need to do a few things:

Post Regularly

To have the chance of building any kind of following on social media, you need to make sure you’re posting regularly and, by regularly, we mean at least once per day! The established knowledge says that the best times to post are:

  • 8am (when everyone wakes up and checks their phone)
  • 5pm (when everyone clocks off after work)

Whenever you post, make sure you’re persistent!

To help you out, there are several scheduling programs that you can use, such as Later. The free version gives you the ability to connect all of your social media channels, before writing, choosing pictures for and scheduling your posts, all in one place. Choose when you want each post to go live and load up a whole week’s worth in minutes!

Be Consistent

That applies to the way you write and, much more importantly, the visuals you post. Social media is a visual medium, even on platforms like Twitter which, originally, was just for words. Make sure every picture or video you post is “on-brand” – keeping with the style and tone of your business.

Making all of that so much easier is where tools like Canva step in. They give you the power to make fresh, clean, visually stunning branding materials, such as:

  • Posters
  • Logos
  • Frames for your social posts

There are loads of templates to choose from, to get you started. You don’t need to be a Photoshop master or have any branding experience whatsoever – it’s so easy!

Be Memorable

Just like with a website, you have a very limited amount of time to capture your audience’s attention.

(Read our blog on how to deal with that right here!)

On your site, your competitors are a Google search and a couple of clicks away but, on social media, that’s reduced to a flick of the thumb! The next distraction comes around lightning-fast, so make sure what you post really strikes your audience and keeps you in their minds after they’ve scrolled on.

Sadly, there aren’t many tools out there specifically to help with this. We find, however, that the best way to make a positive impression in peoples’ minds online is, simply, to be honest. It sounds twee but, in a world where everyone tries their hardest to present a perfect version of themselves, real authenticity shines through. Show who you are, show what you do and see those real connections begin to form!

Maybe social media isn’t really your thing, though. Maybe you’ve never had a Facebook account before. That’s ok! If it all seems a little overwhelming, it can certainly pay to start small. If you’re ready to take that first step into social media marketing and are looking for the place to plant your feet, have a look at our blog on the different types of social media that are out there.

Find the one that’s right for your business and start posting!
