If you have a website with Reason8 and want to use a domain name that you have purchased with another company here's a short description of how to do it.
This is the slightly MORE complicated description of what to do and it applies to you if you are currently using your domain name for email and have a mailbox where your mail is captured and then use POP3 credentials to pull down mail to an email client such as Microsoft Outlook.
If you don't manage your mail in this way or perhaps you have email with your domain name but then forward it automatically to a personal email mailbox such as yahoo or gmail etc then we recommend following our easy solution.
If you can't remember where you purchased the domain name (your domain registrar) try going to this webpage (www.dnstools.com)and enter your domain name in the box. It will give you all kinds of information about your domain name.
Once you have figured out who you used to buy the domain name, you need to login to the control panel they gave you.
Once logged in to their control panel you need to figure out how to make changes to your domain name settings. If you are not familiar with the control panel, you might stumble around until you finally find what you are looking for.
It is possible to split your domain name into two parts:
1) a part that deals with your domain name (we will leave this alone)
2) a part that points people to your website (we will point this to your new reason8 site)
This is the Jargon bit !
To point your domain name to us you need to add what is called an 'A Record' and give it an address to point to (known as an IP address).
Look in the DNS section of your control panel for a place to add an A record and add the following IP address: 80.79.128.210
If there is already an A record present that is pointing to a different IP address you may need to remove that one first to avoid confusing the Internet !
And that's it !
However, if you are not very 'techy' and all this seems like gobbledygook and you have a kind registrar , they may be able to do this for you. If you need to email them then the you can paste the following text into an email:
'Sir, we would like you to modify the DNS for our domain name and add an [ A RECORD ] to our domain pointing to the following IP address 80.79.128.210 (where our new website is located). We wish to continue using your services to manage all our email therefore please leave the MX records and nameserver details unchanged.'
One final note: remember, you will still have to keep renewing this domain name with your registrar otherwise it will stop working and your website will no longer show. Changes won't happen instantly it can sometimes take up to 24 hours for these changes to propagate over the web.
