Before optimising your website you must first decide what words and phrases you want to be found for. These are known as your ‘key-phrases’
Setting up your new business website found on search engines is an important task that needs some care and attention. The first step in the process of building your website is to choose the key words that you expect your customers to use to search for you.
Ask your customers, your friends and maybe your family what they would type in to find your products or services. You may be surprised what they suggest.
Remember, you can’t have them all. Decide on one main key-phrase and create two or three variations of this. Eg. if you decide on “Redhill Plumber” then the other key-phrases might be “Redhill Plumbing Services” and “Surrey Plumber”
If you are still struggling, there are tools you can use that may help. One of the best free ones is: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal and a professional service, often used by experts is http://www.wordtracker.com/.
Try and be as specific as you can. If you are a plumber in Redhill and Surrey then DON’T choose the keyword “plumber” as you will be competing with every other website that relates to plumbing in the entire world and you will have no chance. Instead choose “Plumbing in Redhill” or “Plumber in Surrey”. Even better, if you specialise in fitting bathrooms then a better key-phrase would be “Redhill bathroom fitter”.
It is vital that you take your time and do your research to find the right key-phrases for your website. Choosing the right ones will ensure you get found. However, it can take a long time to ‘un-pick’ the wrong ones.
